Job summary

Phipps Neighborhoods in New York operates the Arches Transformative Mentoring Program in the Soundview area of the Bronx. The program serves young people aged 16-24 who reside in or near the Bronx.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher preferred; high school diploma or equivalency required.
• Experience with disconnected youth; court-involved and/or formerly incarcerated youth preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with young adults; sense of humor is a must.

Responsibilities

• Conduct weekly mentoring sessions, including planning and facilitating each session.
• Implement the Interactive Journaling curriculum through weekly group meetings and one-on-one sessions.
• Attend regular case conferencing meetings regarding progress, strategies and resources.
• Maintain thorough, accurate records for a caseload of mentees in program files and databases.
• Develop intervention strategies and guide participants toward positive, self-determined goals.
• Participate in Arches team supervision and professional development meetings.
• Contribute to outreach, intake and enrollment strategies, including group information sessions.
• Communicate with parents and other entities to gather and share information when necessary.
• Assist team in tracking and distributing participant incentives (meals, metro-cards, stipends, gift cards).
• Handle additional responsibilities assigned by program director.

Program Description

Phipps Neighborhoods, in partnership with the Department of Probation, oversees the Arches Transformative Mentoring Program in the Soundview area of the Bronx. The program works with young people, between the ages of 16-24, who reside in or near the Bronx.

Arches is a curriculum- based group mentoring intervention program that helps justice-involved and disconnected young adults transform the attitudes and behaviors that have led to criminal activity.

Duties and responsibilities

• Conduct weekly mentoring sessions, including planning and facilitating each session
• Implement the Interactive Journaling curriculum through weekly group meetings and one on one sessions
• Attendregular case conferencing meetingsregarding the participants’ progress, including discussing strategies, troubleshooting, andresources for helping participants achieve their goals
• Maintain thorough, accuraterecords for a caseload of mentees, including keeping participants data current in program files and pertinent databases for Phipps Neighborhoods and the Department of Probation
• Develop effective intervention strategies and guide participants toward achieving positive, self-determined goals.
• Participants in Arches team, supervision, and professional development meetings
• Contribute to the team’s outreach, intake and enrollment strategies, including conducting group information sessions and one-on- one intake meetings with prospective mentees

Communicate with various other entities connected with mentees, including parents to gather and shareinformation when necessary

• Assist Arches team in tracking and distribution of participants incentives, such as meals, metro-cards, stipends and gift cards
• Handle additionalresponsibilities and functions as assigned by program director

Qualifications:

• Associate’s Degree or higher preferred; high school diploma or equivalencyrequired
• Experience working with the disconnected youth; experience with court-involved, and/or formerly incarceratedyouth preferred
• Ability to serve as a strong, positive role model for the community
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with young adults
• Sense of humor is a MUST!

Salary: $20.00/hour, 14 hours/week

Days & Hours: Monday – Thursday:

Tuesday & Thursday (5 p.m. – 8 p.m.)
