Job Overview

Mentor/Advisor Specialist (MAS) – Part Time – Student Support, Advising, and Career Development – Posting Number: 201104761.

Role serves as mentor/advisor for students in the Project-Beyond-2 (PB2) program, supporting structured project and peer mentoring activities for participants and community partners.

Key responsibilities include mentoring, program coordination, record‑keeping, training, advising, and assisting with funding and logistics.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide individual advising and mentoring for project participants.
  • Support professional nurse mentoring program for participants.
  • Coordinate structured activities for project participants.
  • Support summer Preadmission Intensive Program for incoming freshmen.
  • Conduct group and one‑to‑one mentoring training sessions for participants and mentors.
  • Track mentoring activities, including peer mentoring, and maintain a mentor‑mentee network.
  • Link students with professional minority nursing organizations and community partners.
  • Coordinate and keep records of structured activities for BSN participants (BSNPP).
  • Coordinate and keep records of efforts to address social determinants of education & health (SDE / SDH).
  • Support summer Preliminary Academic Intensive (PAI) program for incoming freshmen.
  • Advise BSNPP, assist with scholarship applications.
  • Track academic progress electronically of BSNPP and offer additional individualized academic supports as needed.
  • Attend MUCN sessions for enrolled nursing students to foster early, direct contact and encourage project participation.
  • Assist Project Director to seek future funding for project sustainability.
  • Prepare meeting materials including presentations, newsletters, handouts, and related materials; print, bind, and collate.
  • Assist with room reservations, agenda preparation, minutes, and logistics as assigned.
  • Maintain a system for loaning and checking out study aids (books, reference guides, anatomical models).
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) with academic teaching, program planning, and coordination experience, including clinical precepting.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, including teaching, program development, and clinical precepting.
  • Extensive experience mentoring diverse students.
  • Experience working with social determinants of education and health (SDE / SDH) and diverse populations.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive attitude, good communication, and commitment to service excellence.
  • Individual initiative, ability to work independently as part of a coordinated team.
  • Technical proficiency and attention to detail.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of Milwaukee and Marquette University community preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
