MEDICATION TECHNICIAN POSITION AVAILABLE

Position: Medication Technician (Med Tech)
Department: Resident Care
Reports To: Director of Nursing / Executive Director
Location: Assisted Living Community

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a dependable, compassionate, and responsible Medication Technician to join our resident care team.

The Medication Technician is responsible for assisting residents with their medications in accordance with their training, authorization, physician orders, care plans, and applicable regulations.

The ideal candidate understands the importance of accuracy, attention to detail, resident safety, and treating every resident with dignity and respect.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Medication Assistance
  • Assist residents with medications as permitted by applicable regulations and community policies.

  • Follow physician orders, medication records, and established procedures.

  • Administer or assist with medications only within the scope of your training and authorization.

  • Follow the Five Rights of Medication Administration:

    • Right resident
    • Right medication
    • Right dose
    • Right route
    • Right time
  • Observe residents for potential medication-related concerns and report changes promptly.

  • Never administer medication that is unclear, questionable, expired, or inconsistent with the medication record without appropriate clarification.

Medication Management
  • Maintain accurate medication records and documentation.

  • Ensure medications are stored securely and appropriately.

  • Follow procedures for controlled medications and medication counts.

  • Report medication errors, refusals, missed medications, or other concerns immediately according to community policy.

  • Communicate medication concerns with the appropriate nurse or supervisor.

RESIDENT CARE

Medication Technicians are expected to provide more than medication assistance. They should help create a safe and supportive environment for residents.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Treating residents with dignity and respect.

  • Maintaining resident privacy and confidentiality.

  • Assisting residents according to their care plans and assigned duties.

  • Observing and reporting changes in resident condition.

  • Responding appropriately to resident requests and concerns.

  • Providing reassurance and compassionate support.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS
  • Follow all medication policies and procedures.

  • Maintain accurate documentation.

  • Keep medications secured at all times.

  • Never leave medication unattended.

  • Immediately report medication errors or safety concerns.

  • Follow infection-control and hand-hygiene procedures.

  • Follow emergency procedures and promptly report changes in resident condition.

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents.

COMMUNICATION

Effective communication is essential. The Med Tech is expected to communicate promptly with:

  • Director of Nursing

  • Executive Director

  • Nurses

  • Resident Care Staff

  • Other Medication Technicians

  • Residents and families, within appropriate professional boundaries

Any significant change in a resident's condition, medication concern, fall, injury, refusal, or other unusual occurrence should be reported according to community policy and applicable requirements.

SHIFT EXPECTATIONS

Medication Technicians are expected to:

  • Complete medication passes within the required timeframes.

  • Complete all required documentation before the end of the shift.

  • Properly communicate information to the next shift.

  • Complete assigned resident care responsibilities.

  • Keep the medication area clean and organized.

  • Remain attentive and focused during medication administration.

  • Avoid unnecessary distractions during medication passes.
