Job summary

Hickory Recovery is seeking a Medication Technician to support adult clients with substance use and behavioral health care on the overnight shift. You will work under the Director of Nursing to assist with safe medication administration, documentation, and education while monitoring health and maintaining supplies.

The role requires current QMA or EMT/Paramedic certification, patient-centered communication, and ability to work weekends/holidays.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) program or current EMT/Paramedic certification.
• Current EMT or Paramedic certification accepted.
• At least two years of Medication Aide experience preferred.
• Previous hospital/behavioral health/substance use treatment experience preferred.
• HIPAA compliance and confidentiality emphasized.

Responsibilities

• Set up and administer medications under supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Document medication administration accurately in the client’s medical record.
• Obtain vital signs and monitor client health, reporting changes to nursing staff.
• Collect urine drug screens and specimens as per facility procedures.

Medication Technician - Hickory Treatment Centers

Shift Schedule: Overnight Shift (7:00pm - 7:30am)

About the Role

The Medication Technician (Med Tech) plays an important role in supporting the health, safety, and treatment of adult clients receiving care for substance use and behavioral health concerns.

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing and licensed nursing staff, the Med Tech is responsible for supporting the safe administration, management, documentation, and education of client medications. This role also assists with monitoring client health, collecting specimens, maintaining medication supplies, and ensuring compliance with facility, state, and regulatory standards.

Job Qualifications

• Successful completion of a Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) program through an accredited nursing school or current EMT/ Paramedic certification
• Current EMT or Paramedic certification is accepted
• At least two years of previous Medication Aide experience preferred
• Previous hospital, behavioral health, or substance use treatment experience preferred
• Ability to maintain strict client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
• Professional demeanor, appearance, and attitude
• High standards of ethics, integrity, and client service
• Knowledge of behavioral health treatment practices and client-centered care
• Strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and decision-making skills

Key Responsibilities

Medication Administration & Client Care

• Set up and administer medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse
• Document medication administration accurately and promptly in the client’s medical record
• Apply topical medications and administer metered-dose inhalers as directed
• Administer enemas under the direction of a licensed nurse
• Provide medication-related education and support to clients within the scope of the role
• Monitor clients for concerns related to medication administration and promptly report findings to licensed nursing staff

Vital Signs & Health Monitoring

• Obtain and document client vital signs, including oxygen saturation
• Perform blood glucose testing and report results to the licensed nurse
• Assist with minor treatments after assessment and direction from a licensed nurse
• Observe and communicate changes in client condition to appropriate nursing staff

Specimen Collection & Testing

• Collect urine drug screen (UDS) and fecal specimens in accordance with facility procedures
• Complete required testing and accurately document results
• Maintain confidentiality and follow all applicable safety and infection-control procedures

Medication Inventory & Equipment Maintenance

• Clean and maintain medication carts in accordance with facility policies
• Ensure medication carts are organized and free of loose, expired, or improperly stored medications
• Verify that medications are clearly labeled and stored appropriately
• Identify medications requiring replenishment and tag them for reorder as needed
• Report medication inventory concerns to the appropriate licensed nursing staff

Documentation, Compliance & Professional Standards

• Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medication and client-care documentation
• Follow all facility policies, medication administration procedures, and safety protocols
• Maintain compliance with Hickory standards, state regulations, and Joint Commission requirements
• Participate in required training, professional development, and continuing education
• Maintain professional, respectful, and therapeutic interactions with clients and team members
• Collaborate effectively with nursing staff and the interdisciplinary treatment team

Compensation

$19.00–$24.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
