Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas seeks a Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist to perform testing and accessioning for transfusion services, ensuring accurate specimen handling and reporting.

This 2nd shift position runs Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM with rotating weekends and holidays, requiring a Bachelor's in medical technology or related field and certification eligibility within 180 days. UT Southwestern offers robust benefits and a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs testing and accessioning of patient specimens for transfusion services.
  • Conducts blood group, Rh type, cross-match and antibody identification per SOPs.
  • Performs quality control procedures and troubleshoots instrument issues.
  • Maintains efficient workflow and meets turnaround time expectations.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and team training.

Job Duties


  • Job knowledge. Accurately performs testing, which includes accessioning and registering patient's specimen for transfusion services testing and products. Can perform blood group, Rh type (ABO/Rh), cross-match and antibody identification based on the Transfusion Services policies and procedures. Prepares and labels components based on the standard operating procedure, Issues blood products by performing all required cross-reference check. Recognizes deviation from expected results; evaluates results for discrepancies and feasibility, utilizing instrument and LIS flags, analyzes and corrects problems according to procedure. Recognizes critical results and correctly documents notification of critical results to appropriate personnel.

  • Quality Orientation. Performs all quality control procedures to ensure validity of test results. Evaluates, documents, and troubleshoots quality control according to lab protocols. Takes appropriate corrective action when errors are detected or specimen rejection / recollection is required. Ensures patient specimen stability and proper sample processing. Inventory check of reagents as required. Treat all proficiency test samples according to CAP guidelines and laboratory expectations.

  • Instrumentation. Performs instrument startup and shutdown. Perform and document all maintenance procedures and calibrations, as needed. Evaluates function checks and calibration results. Performs corrective action when necessary.

  • Productivity. Ensures smooth workflow in all areas of the laboratory. Exhibits efficient use of time and resources. Meets expectations for TAT and pending list review. Coordinates daily tasks to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned shift

  • Attendance. Reports for work on the assigned days at the assigned times.

  • Performs special projects such as evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.

  • Achieves a minimum of 10 continuing education hours annually. Continuously seeks knowledge in and outside of functional area.

  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement Activities. Serves on committees and task forces. Orientates and instructs students and laboratory personnel in established clinical laboratory techniques, as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
