Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX seeks a laboratory professional to provide technical skills for performance of basic to complex laboratory procedures under general supervision. You will ensure accuracy, quality control, instrument maintenance, and productive workflow while upholding CAP guidelines and patient safety; new graduates welcomed with MT certification path.

Responsibilities include testing, troubleshooting, managing instruments, and contributing to performance improvement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in medical technology or related field.
  • MT certification; new graduates may be hired without but must earn within 180 days.

  • Recognizes deviations from expected results; evaluates results for discrepancies and feasibility; corrects problems.
  • Performs instrument startup and shutdown; documents maintenance, calibrations, and function checks.
  • Ensures smooth workflow; meets turnaround times and pending list reviews; coordinates daily tasks for productivity.
  • Reports for work on assigned days and shifts; adheres to schedule.
  • Performs evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.
  • Pursues continuous education; participates in performance improvement activities and instructs others as needed.

Required
Experience and Education
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in medical technology or related field. No experience required.
  • Licenses and Certifications: (MT) MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST Certification as Medical Technologist by approved accrediting agency. New graduates can be hired without the certification, but will be given the opportunity to earn it within 180 days.
Job Duties
  • Job knowledge. Accurately performs testing according to established laboratory policies and procedures. Recognizes deviations from expected results; evaluates results for discrepancies and feasibility, utilizing instrument and LIS flags, and corrects problems according to procedure. Recognizes critical results and documents notification of critical results to appropriate personnel.
  • Quality orientation. Performs all quality control procedures to ensure validity of test results. Evaluates, documents, and troubleshoots quality control according to lab protocols. Takes appropriate corrective action when errors are detected or specimen rejection/recollection is required. Ensures patient specimen stability and proper sample processing. Treats all proficiency test samples according to CAP guidelines and laboratory expectations.
  • Instrumentation. Performs instrument startup and shutdown. Performs and documents all maintenance procedures and calibrations as needed. Evaluates function checks and calibration results. Performs corrective action when necessary.
  • Productivity. Ensures smooth workflow in all areas of the laboratory. Exhibits efficient use of time and resources. Meets expectations for TAT and pending list review. Coordinates daily tasks to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned shift.
  • Attendance. Reports for work on the assigned days at the assigned times.
  • Special projects. Performs evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.
  • Continuing education. Achieves a minimum of 10 continuing education hours annually. Continuously seeks knowledge in and outside of functional area.
  • Performance improvement. Actively participates in performance improvement activities; serves on committees and task forces. Orients and instructs students and laboratory personnel in established clinical laboratory techniques, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
