Job summary

Mitchell County Hospital District is seeking a Medical Technologist in the Laboratory to perform clinical tests, interpret results, and maintain instruments. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or CLS, and licensure/registration with ASCP, AMT, ISLCT or HEW.

One year of experience is preferred, with ability to work rotating shifts. The successful candidate will handle specimen collection, testing across chemistry, hematology, serology, and blood bank, and ensure HIPAA

Job Title: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST

Department: LABORATORY

Reports To: LAB DIRECTOR

FLSA Status: NON-EXEMPT

Position Summary: Obtains specimens form patients and performs established clinical tests and procedures. Interpret test results. Perform instrument and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or in Clinical Laboratory Sciences
  • Personal Job-Related Skills: Knowledge of medical laboratory collection, testing and use of equipment.Familiar with operating computers.
  • License, Registry or Certification: Licensed Medical Technologist; registered by ASCP, AMT ISLCT or HEW.
  • Prior Work Experience: One year of medical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting, standing, lifting up to 30 pounds. Must be able to hear equipment alarms and have the ability to read labeling, instructions and to conduct tests.
Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:
  1. Obtains specimens from patinets.
    1. Review and follow requests for tests and procedures prescribed by physicians.
    2. Draw and process specimens promptly and in compliance with established procedure.
    3. Identify and label specimens.
    4. Provides care appropriate for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
    5. Assesses and interprets data on neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
  2. Performs routine and special medical laboratory tests.
    1. Follows and establishes procedures for routine lab testing.
    2. Follows the established procedures when performing chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urine analysis, bacterial cultures, blood bank, or serology test procedures.
    3. Follows quality control procedures for all tests.
  3. Prepares test reports and maintains permanent records.
    1. Reviews accuracy of results before reporting.
    1. Checks validity by evaluation of quality control data, previous tests and duplicate testing.
    1. Reports panic values to nursing unit or appropriate physician.
    1. Records all work completed and maintains workload information on work completed.
    1. Keeps laboratory supervisor informed of activities including unusual patient data or QC results.
  1. Maintains instruments and equipment.
    1. Performs routine and preventative maintenance.
    2. Reports equipment problems to supervisor immediately.
    3. Maintains logs and other documentation.
Other Significant Requirements:
  1. Maintain HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
  2. Follow all policies and procedures set forth by Mitchell County Hospital District.
  3. Provide service directly to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
  4. Provides supervision to students who are undergoing clinical rotations to enhance their knowledge on the role of laboratory in patient healthcare.
  5. Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
