Job description

Requires a Bachelor degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Sciences. Requires a minimum of 3 years of clinical lab experience, with a preference for 5 years. Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency as a Med Technologist, Med Technician, or microbiology categorical or specialty certification is preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performing and interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA ‘88.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

• Performs moderate and high complexity tests after specialized training and required experience, and interprets them.
• Acts as a resource and interprets tests for laboratory users, consistent with training and knowledge level.
• Reviews testing and procedures performed by staff to ensure compliance with regulations when qualified.
• Prioritizes STAT and routine samples.
• Ensures accurate specimen identification and labeling according to SOPs.
• Verifies sample appropriateness, obtains approvals for deviations, and documents in LIS.
• Performs testing within defined time frames based on specimen viability.
• Resolves mislabeled or inappropriate specimens, documents actions, and informs relevant personnel.
• Stores samples properly and processes specimens within established time limits.
• Accession required tests and performs instrument and equipment maintenance.
• Recognizes and reports instrument or methodology issues promptly.
• Performs QC procedures and assesses data according to policies.
• Identifies and addresses technical discrepancies, performs additional testing if needed, and documents findings.
• Transcribes results accurately into LIS, including critical values and corrections.
• Ensures proper documentation and communication of critical alert values.
• Maintains proficiency in LIS functions and manages reagent and supply inventories.
• Completes all work by shift end, assists other sections, and participates in QA activities.
• Participates in training, meetings, and safety protocols, and maintains confidentiality and cleanliness.
• Performs additional duties as assigned, supporting the mission of the hospital.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, including clinical internship, or in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certification by ASCP, NCA, or equivalent preferred. Equivalent agency certification requiring a science degree and exam is acceptable.

Experience: 2 years in clinical laboratory for those with a Chemistry, Biology, or Biochemistry degree; 1 year for those with Medical Technology or CLS degrees.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of high complexity testing standards, ability to perform and interpret such tests, maintain compliance with regulations, manual dexterity, and effective communication skills.

Work is on-site, 40 hours weekly during first shift, with rotating weekends and holidays. No remote work involved.
