Job description

Requires a Bachelor degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Sciences. Requires a minimum of 3 years of clinical lab experience, with a stated preference of 5 years experience. Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency as a Med Technologist, Med Technician, or microbiology categorical or specialty certification is preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performing and appropriately interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA ‘88.

Schedule: Full Time (Evenings)
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
  1. Perform moderate and high complexity tests after specialized training and required experience, and interpret them.
  2. Act as a resource and interpret tests for laboratory users in a manner consistent with level of training and knowledge.
  3. Review testing and procedures performed by other staff to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies when qualified.
  4. Prioritize STAT and routine samples.
  5. Ensure accurate specimen identification and labeling according to SOP.
  6. Verify sample appropriateness for requested testing, obtain approvals for deviations, and document accordingly.
  7. Perform testing within defined time periods based on specimen viability.
  8. Address and document issues with mislabeled or inappropriate specimens.
  9. Communicate specimen issues to relevant personnel and ensure proper storage.
  10. Accession required tests as per SOP.
  11. Perform instrument and equipment maintenance as per policies.
  12. Recognize and report instrument or methodology problems promptly.
  13. Perform QC procedures and evaluate QC data.
  14. Identify and address technical discrepancies and problems in lab operations.
  15. Conduct analytic testing and validate results.
  16. Maintain accurate and clear records of test performance.
  17. Review and investigate patient results, especially discrepancies, and notify appropriate personnel.
  18. Transcribe results into LIS accurately, including critical values and corrections.
  19. Append required comments and verify entered LIS codes.
  20. Notify of Critical Alert Values and document accordingly.
  21. Maintain proficiency in LIS functions.
  22. Document receipt, quality control, and reagent use.
  23. Manage blood inventories if applicable.
  24. Complete all work by shift end and hand-off.
  25. Assist other sections as needed and participate in QA/QI activities.
  26. Participate in competency assessments and continuing education.
  27. Attend staff meetings and support educational activities.
  28. Participate in departmental committees or task forces.
  29. Communicate professionally and cooperate with staff.
  30. Report safety hazards and participate in safety training.
  31. Maintain confidentiality and abide by HIPAA policies.
  32. Keep work area neat and stocked, and manage supplies.
  33. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Characteristics

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, including clinical internship, or in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certification by ASCP, NCA, or equivalent preferred; equivalent agencies include AMT, AAB, HEW, ASM.

Experience: 2 years in clinical laboratory for Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry degrees; 1 year for Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science degrees.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of high complexity testing, regulatory compliance, manual dexterity, and English communication skills.

Work is on-site, 40 hours weekly, during 1st shift with rotating weekends and holidays. No remote work involved.
