Job description

Requires a Bachelor degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Sciences. Requires a minimum of 3 years of clinical lab experience, with a preference for 5 years. Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency as a Med Technologist, Med Technician, or microbiology categorical or specialty certification is preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performing and interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA '88.

Department: Microbiology Lab
Schedule: Full Time (Evenings)
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
  1. Perform moderate and high complexity tests after specialized training and experience, and interpret results.
  2. Serve as a resource for test interpretation for laboratory users, consistent with training and knowledge level.
  3. Review testing and procedures performed by others to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, when qualified.
  4. Prioritize STAT and routine samples.
  5. Ensure accurate specimen identification and labeling according to SOPs.
  6. Verify sample appropriateness for testing, obtain approvals for deviations, and document accordingly.
  7. Perform tests within the required timeframes based on specimen viability.
  8. Address and document issues with mislabeled or inappropriate specimens.
  9. Communicate specimen problems to relevant sections and ensure proper storage of samples.
  10. Accession samples for tests as per SOPs.
  11. Conduct instrument and equipment maintenance as per policies.
  12. Recognize and report instrument or methodology issues promptly.
  13. Perform QC procedures and evaluate QC data.
  14. Identify and report technical discrepancies, bringing issues to supervisory attention.
  15. Conduct analytic testing, interpret results, and review testing performed by others.
  16. Maintain accurate and legible records of test activities.
  17. Review patient results, investigate discrepancies, and document activities.
  18. Transcribe results into LIS accurately, including critical values and corrections.
  19. Append coded comments and verify LIS entries for transcription accuracy.
  20. Notify relevant personnel of Critical Alert Values and document accordingly.
  21. Maintain proficiency in LIS functions and document reagent and material usage.
  22. Manage blood inventories if applicable.
  23. Complete all work by shift end or hand-off, assist other sections as needed, and participate in QA/QI activities.
  24. Maintain competency documentation and participate in continuing education.
  25. Support educational activities for students and staff, and participate in departmental committees.
  26. Communicate professionally and work cooperatively with team members.
  27. Report safety hazards and participate in safety training.
  28. Respect confidentiality policies and maintain a neat, stocked work environment.
  29. Perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision, prioritize work, and communicate with leadership.
  30. Restock supplies, monitor inventory, and adhere to safety and dress code policies.
  31. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Characteristics

Education: Bachelor's in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, including a supervised internship or a degree in an applied science with certification.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Preferred certification by ASCP, NCA, or equivalent, with specific agency requirements outlined.

Experience: 2 years in clinical lab for those with a degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Biochemistry; 1 year for those with a degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of high complexity testing, regulatory compliance, manual dexterity, and communication skills.

Work involves onsite 40 hours weekly during 1st shift, with rotating weekends and holidays. No remote work.
