Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a Medical Technologist to perform moderate and high complexity testing on blood and body fluids. The role spans multiple lab areas, ensuring accuracy through calibration, QC, and proper LIS use.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related discipline.
  • High School Degree or Equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in a clinical laboratory.
  • Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP BOC or equivalent) preferred and must be obtained within the first year if not certified.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Moderate and High Complexity Testing on blood and body fluids.
  • Work across multiple lab areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).
  • Ensure accurate results via maintenance, calibration and QC procedures.
  • Properly use Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Maintain records and statistics per regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with phlebotomy and hospital staff for proper specimen collection.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, methods, and specimen collection issues.
  • Train new employees and students on lab methods, instruments, and policies.
  • Communicate results or issues to medical or nursing staff.
  • Demonstrate good customer service and work under high pressure.

Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing. Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

Job Description

The Medical Technologist (MT) performs a wide variety of duties in the laboratory. The MT is responsible for the following:

  • Perform Moderate and High Complexity Testing on blood and all types of body fluid specimens.
  • Ability to work in various areas of the Laboratory (i.e. Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, etc.)
  • Insure accurate and reliable test results by adhering to instrument maintenance, calibration and quality control procedures.
  • Ability to properly use Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Maintains records and statistical data according to regulatory requirements
  • Coordinates with phlebotomy and other hospital staff to ensure proper collection of patient samples
  • Troubleshoot problems with laboratory equipment, test methods, and sample collection
  • Trains new employees and students on laboratory methods, instruments, and policies
  • Ability to communicate patient results and/or problems to Medical or Nursing Staff
  • Good customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure of emergency situation
  • Other duties assigned by Supervisor or Laboratory Director
Education & Experience

Education: High School Degree or Equivalent

Work Experience: 2 years

Education: Bachelor of Science degree In Medical Technology or relevant medical or scientific discipline.

Experience: None.

Certification

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by ASCP BOC or equivalent, or relevant categorical certification preferred at the time of hire, however, if not certified, certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.
