Job summary

WakeMed Health & Hospitals conducts routine and specialized laboratory testing to aid in diagnosis and treatment. Staff use dedicated instruments and computer systems to evaluate and report patient results with substantial independent judgment within established methods.

The department leads quality control and ongoing maintenance of equipment and supplies while supporting safety and regulatory initiatives.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Technology required.
• Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science preferred.
• 2 years clinical experience in moderate/high complexity testing preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests for diagnosis and treatment.
• Evaluate and report patient results with considerable independent judgment.
• Perform quality control procedures and maintain equipment and supplies.
• Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.
• Train new employees and/or students in theoretical and operational aspects.
• May assume responsibility for one or more laboratory projects or functions such as performance improvement, safety, and regulatory/compliance.

Overview

Performs routine and specialized laboratory tests and other procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Utilizes requisite equipment, instruments, and computer systems. Evaluates and reports patient results using considerable independent judgment within the scope of established testing methods. Performs quality control procedures and contributes to the maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies. Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation. May assume responsibility for one or more laboratory projects or functions such as performance improvement, safety, quality control, regulatory, administrative, staff development, and computer systems. Trains new employees and/or students in the theoretical and operational aspects of procedures and serves as a resource for less experienced staff. Performs other duties as assigned.
