Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician with appropriate clinical laboratory education to perform a broad range of chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests.

You will adhere to CLIA-compliant protocols, interpret test results in the patient context, maintain equipment, and ensure accurate record-keeping in a dynamic diagnostic lab environment.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree from a clinical lab science program (MLT) or Bachelor's degree in sciences meeting high complexity testing requirements (CLIA Sec. 493.1487).
  • ASCP certification as an MLT/MT is preferred but not required if equivalent education/experience qualifies.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and interprets various chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests to aid in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Follows established protocols to perform tests in assigned area and maintain quality control.
  • Interprets results in context of patient history and diagnosis; communicates findings for appropriate action.
  • Ensures preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment; maintains accurate lab records.

Performs and interprets various chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Major Responsibilities
  • Follows established protocols to perform a wide range of test in an assigned area.
  • Refs to Medical Technologist II's or supervisory or lead staff members for assistance in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results.
  • Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
  • Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.
  • Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area.
  • Performs routine troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.
  • Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.
Position Qualifications

License/Certification/Education: Required: Associates degree from a clinical lab science program (MLT). -OR- Bachelor's Degree in sciences. Degree and course work in the sciences must meet the requirements for high complexity testing as defined CLIA Sec. 493.1487 to qualify for hiring. Preferred: ASCP certification as an MLT /MT Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
