Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts seeks a Lead Medical Technologist to coordinate the Core Chemistry lab and supervise the work of laboratory staff. You will ensure quality control, interpret complex chemical test results, and support diagnosis and patient care.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, ASCP MT certification preferred, and five years of leadership in a clinical laboratory. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with evening shifts and a competitive hourly range

Responsibilities

  • Interviews prospective candidates for positions in the laboratory and makes recommendation to Manager.
  • Evaluates new hires performance and conducts performance reviews on employees assigned.
  • Schedules employees for various lab benches and shifts; reviews all work performed in area to ensure completeness and quality.
  • Discusses performance issues with employees and recommends disciplinary action to Manager.
  • Follows established protocols to perform and interpret tests across assigned area.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I’s and Medical Lab Technicians in interpretation of test results.
  • Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history and condition to explain results.
  • Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
  • Develops new tests and quality procedures for the area.
  • Ensures test results meet laboratory quality control requirements.
  • Maintains equipment and performs preventive maintenance.
  • Performs complex troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
  • Instructs technicians in setup and operation of new equipment and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with safety policies and quality standards.
  • Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records of tests performed.

Coordinates the work of others as assigned in a medical laboratory section. Works with considerable independence to perform and interpret various chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Is expert in the use of all equipment and procedures for an assigned area.

Major Responsibilities

  • Schedules employees for various lab benches and shifts; reviews all work performed in area to ensure completeness and quality and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Discusses performance issues with employees and recommends disciplinary action to Manager.i>
  • Follows established protocols to perform an all kinds of tests, including the most complex for an assigned area.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I’s and Medical Lab. Technicians in the interpretation of highly complex or unusual test results.
  • Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.
  • Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
  • Develops new test and quality procedures for assigned area.
  • Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
  • Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area.
  • Performs complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.
  • May assist in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications.
  • Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
  • Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.
Position Qualifications
  • License/Certification/Education: Required: Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology. Preferred: ASCP certification as an MT is preferred.
  • Experience/Skills: Required: Five years of related experience with demonstrated leadership skills. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
  • Lead Medical Technologist supporting the Core Lab.: Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis and Central Processing.
