Job summary

The Medical Technologist I at Children’s Hospital Colorado participates in performing laboratory testing across microbiology and serology, reporting timely and accurate results during the evening shift (12:00 - 20:30) with rotating weekends and holidays.

You will ensure quality control, troubleshoot instruments, and may mentor new staff while following SOPs and regulatory guidelines to deliver reliable patient results in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Certification required within 6 months of eligibility (ASCP or equivalent).
  • Combination of additional experience and education may substitute on a 1:1 year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Report accurate results, evaluate results for clinical significance and validity.
  • Ensure quality control is acceptable and instrumentation is functioning and maintained within defined tolerance limits and documentation is completed.
  • Consciously work to minimize errors and correct and document errors in a timely manner.
  • Perform all laboratory functions according to SOPs and guidelines, including proficiency testing and regulatory compliance.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and assay performance when results are questionable.
  • May teach, train and/or mentor new employees, students and other healthcare professionals when requested.
  • May procure blood from patients by venipuncture following age-specific guidelines.

Job description

Shift

Department: Microbiology (Molecular Microbiology and Serology). Evening Shift: 12:00 - 20:30. Rotating weekends and holidays.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for reporting accurate results, evaluating results for clinical significance and validity, and for recognition of atypical/abnormal results requiring additional follow up.
  • Ensures quality control is acceptable and instrumentation is functioning and maintained within defined tolerance limits and documentation is completed.
  • Consciously works to minimize errors and takes responsibility for correcting and documenting errors in a timely manner.
  • Performs all laboratory functions according to standard operating procedures and guidelines established by regulatory agencies, including participation in proficiency testing and familiarization with regulations and quality indicators.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and assay performance when results are questionable.
  • May teach, train and/or mentor new employees, students and other healthcare professionals according to standard operating procedures, when requested.
  • May procure blood from patients by venipuncture, fingerstick or heelstick to obtain blood samples for analysis following age‑specific guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Degrees
    • Bachelor of Science
  • Area of Study
    • in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Experience
    • Minimum Experience. Required: None.
  • Equivalency
    • Combination of additional experience and education may substitute on a 1:1 year basis.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) – Medical Technologist/Scientist Certification ASCP or equivalent or; certification required within 6 months of eligibility
Preferred Qualifications
  • Molecular Microbiology and Serology experience preferred
Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience. Hourly Range: $30.04 to $45.06
