Job description

ROLE SUMMARY

Howard University Hospital is seeking an experienced Medical Technologist Generalist II to perform routine and complex clinical diagnostic testing across Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank and Microbiology (Bacteriology, Serology, Virology, Mycology and Mycobacteriology). This is a bench role for a seasoned generalist — you will work across multiple laboratory disciplines, resolve instrument and quality issues independently, and serve as a mentor to Medical Technologist I staff, other laboratory personnel and healthcare professional students. Your results directly support diagnosis and treatment decisions at the nation's only teaching hospital located on the campus of a Historically Black College or University.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Perform patient and Quality Control (QC) testing, develop skills and maintain competency in assigned laboratory areas; report results in accordance with departmental policy and keep your error rate consistent with established departmental standards.
  • Report and document critical and corrected values according to medical laboratory policy.
  • Apply clinical correlation of current laboratory test results with other known patient laboratory tests during result verification, including delta checks, per department procedure.
  • Prioritize and manage your workload to meet or exceed established Turn-Around-Times (TATs).
  • Maintain proper inventories, use supplies and reagents correctly, communicate inventory needs promptly, and restock workstations to maintain consistent workflow.
  • Receive, store and verify reagents for quality prior to use; use and dispose of reagents and supplies according to manufacturer instructions, procedural instructions and departmental safety guidelines.
  • Monitor equipment performance, diagnose malfunctions, and make repairs or initiate service requests. Perform and document routine and complex equipment maintenance on schedule; recognize, troubleshoot, resolve and document instrument malfunctions in a timely manner; contact the manufacturer's technical service for resolution as needed; perform instrument reboot/restart processes after power or interface disruption.
  • Report quality issues to a supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Communicate specimen status — including pending log problems and critical values — to the appropriate person(s).
  • Investigate, document and resolve problems and complaints; handle customer complaints professionally and in accordance with the department's customer service policy, escalating unresolved problems to the appropriate Assistant Laboratory Manager.
  • Apply compliance guidelines to all testing and reporting activities; suggest process improvements and update procedures in compliance with departmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Actively participate in laboratory preparation for inspections by the College of American Pathologists, the Food and Drug Administration, the District of Columbia Department of Health, the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks), The Joint Commission and other accrediting and regulatory bodies.
  • May serve as a mentor to Medical Technologist I staff, other laboratory staff and healthcare professional students.
  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct; participate actively in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities and in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
  • Attend annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training, including HIPAA Privacy training; adhere to the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures; and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
  • Assume other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressive work experience in an accredited laboratory.
  • Registry by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as MT or H/C, or an equivalent registry.
  • Ability to accurately perform testing procedures and to handle specimens properly.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and evaluating laboratory results.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex testing across the assigned generalist disciplines — Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank and Microbiology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality, safety and compliance programs, including biohazard and chemical risks and the precautions required to avoid contamination.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Competence in both oral and written English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
  • Sufficient sight (including color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to walk and stand frequently, and to sit, bend and squat occasionally; ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 35 lbs., and more than 35 lbs. with the use of equipment.
  • Availability to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed to support a 24/7 clinical laboratory.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
  • Generalist bench experience across multiple disciplines in a hospital or academic medical center laboratory.
  • Experience training, precepting or mentoring laboratory staff or students.
  • Experience supporting laboratory accreditation and regulatory inspections.
