Job Summary
- The Medical Technologist-ASCP is responsible for performing routine and complex laboratory tests in areas such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and blood banking
- This role involves conducting diagnostic testing, analyzing test results, and maintaining laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test outcomes
- The Medical Technologist collaborates with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide timely and effective patient care in an acute care hospital setting
Essential Functions
- Perform laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, and immunohematology
- Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment according to standard operating procedures
- Analyze test results for accuracy, identify anomalies, and take corrective action as needed
- Document all test results and report critical values promptly to the appropriate personnel
- Maintain quality control and quality assurance protocols to ensure regulatory compliance
- Perform venipuncture and specimen collection as required
- Assist in the training and orientation of new laboratory staff and students
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to infection control and safety protocols
- Communicate effectively with medical staff, patients, and other departments regarding laboratory procedures and test results
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives and continuing education to maintain clinical competencies
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in testing and documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR)
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related science discipline required
Licenses/Certifications
- Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) required
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory setting preferred
