Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Generalist Medical Laboratory Scientist to cover evening and night shifts, performing and reporting results in chemistry, hematology and coagulation. Pay range: $26.55 - $43.10 / hour

Job Highlights

Our core laboratory team provides evening and night shift coverage, and they play a vital role in delivering accurate, timely results for inpatient, emergency, and critical care services around the clock. In this expanded generalist role, you’ll support both chemistry, hematology, and coagulation testing, including general and special chemistry, hematology analysis, urinalysis, routine coagulation studies, peripheral smear review and cell identification, body fluid and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytospins, and urine sediment analysis. Job Description

To perform, check accuracy and report results of routine and complex laboratory procedures on body tissues, fluids and other substances when received. To assist supervisor and/or team lead with evaluating new instruments and/or methods, reagent preparation, quality control information, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance. To assist team lead with apheresis procedures, bone marrows, coordinating educational sessions, computer operations, and/or quality control/improvement activities within a section as needed.

Qualifications

There are two pathways for qualification; work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement under either pathway. Qualified with either a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory or a related field with the completion of a twelve (12) month internship in a Medical Technology program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or as a Medical Technologist (MT) with the American Medical Technologists (AMT) required OR for students pursuing a Medical Technology degree, a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory or a related field with the completion of a twelve (12) month internship in an approved program as previously described required within nine (9) months from date of hire. Certification from ASCP or AMT must be obtained within fifteen (15) months from date of hire. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required within thirty (30) days from date of hire depending on the type of patient related care performed.
