Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Medical Technologist (Generalist) in the Blood Bank and Core Lab department. Here, you will perform routine tests, operate state-of-the-art instruments, and support blood services for the hospital and patients. You will be responsible for quality control, instrument maintenance, and method development to support a broad menu of routine and esoteric tests, including antibody identification. This department provides laboratory testing to various healthcare entities, managed care organizations, non-affiliated hospitals, outpatient clinics, and private physicians' offices. We offer a full range of diagnostic services in clinical and anatomical pathology with various areas of expertise. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity based in the greater Chicagoland area.

*Will consider Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), and MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) certifications*

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $5,000

Under the supervision of the Lab Supervisor, the Medical Technologist will obtain, process, analyze, and report patient test results. You will perform and interpret quality control, implement corrective actions, perform basic equipment maintenance, troubleshoot instruments, and provide technical assistance to customers when appropriate. Continuing education is encouraged. Responsibilities are defined by your competence, experience, and participation. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Adhere to all corporate compliance requirements and communicate issues promptly.
  2. Identify opportunities to improve departmental efficiency and contribute to time and cost savings.
  3. Maintain inventory and supplies at optimal levels.
  4. Provide technical assistance to customers and promote teamwork.
  5. Perform standard and specialized laboratory techniques using automated and manual methods.
  6. Operate laboratory instruments, ensure proper functioning through quality control and calibration.
  7. Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions and perform repairs on selected equipment.
  8. Maintain accurate records, process data, and enter results into the LIS/HIS systems proficiently.
  9. Prepare samples, determine their acceptability, and ensure proper handling.
  10. Work across all workstations within the department and be cross-trained as needed.
  11. Verify results accurately within specified timeframes, including STAT results.
  12. Evaluate, interpret, and report abnormal and critical results consistently.
  13. Follow safety policies and procedures at all times.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical laboratory procedures, concepts, and applications, typically gained through a baccalaureate degree with training in medical technology or certification through an accredited proficiency exam.
  • B.S. in biological sciences with successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology program and certification or equivalent experience as outlined.
  • MT (ASCP), MT eligible, or equivalent certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of pertinent laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory information systems and automation equipment.

Position Details

  • Part-Time (20 hours/week)
  • Evening shifts (2:30 pm - 11:00 pm), with varying days and every other weekend.
