The Clinical Pathology Laboratory within the NC State Veterinary Hospital is operational Monday–Friday 8am–5pm; weekends and holidays 8am–12pm. The lab is composed of eight smaller laboratory entities: Special Chemistry, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Cytology, and Flow Cytometry, with three major functions: it is primarily a teaching/service laboratory, aiding in the teaching of clinical pathology to veterinary students through providing laboratory results for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients admitted to the NC State Veterinary Hospital. This lab also provides clinical laboratory testing for research cases in the College of Veterinary Medicine and functions as a service laboratory to CVM researchers. Additionally, the Clinical Pathology Lab functions as a reference laboratory for selected tests sent in by referring veterinarians. Since the lab began in 1984, our services have expanded to include a large variety of tests with approximately 550 order-able tests and 80 test profiles. The laboratory also serves as a central receiving area for all “send-out” tests, i.e. necessary tests unavailable at the VH that must be mailed or delivered to reference labs within or outside the CVM . An average of 5,000 accessions per month are performed in this laboratory.
Operating sophisticated instrumentation and managing data entry within the Laboratory Information System (LIS), this role ensures a high standard of accuracy by applying knowledge of the theoretical application of procedures and adhering strictly to quality assurance and laboratory safety protocols. The position troubleshoots issues, provides technical and administrative oversight for laboratory operations and inventory, and serves as a consultative resource for clinicians and veterinary technicians. Additionally, the Medical Technologist plays an active role in education by developing training materials and instructing technical staff, emergency personnel who perform lab testing, student technicians, and occasionally veterinary students.
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
