Job Summary:
Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in diagnosis and monitoring of various disease states. Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing. Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.
Responsibilities:
- Performs, verifies, and reports laboratory tests in assigned areas as per policy/procedure manuals.
- Analyzes blood cells using microscopic techniques.
- Ensures operation of analyzers and lab equipment through calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.
- Provides information on medical technology by answering questions and requests.
- Prepares reports of findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data.
- Maintains professional knowledge through workshops, publications, and networking.
- Fosters cooperation within and between departments.
- Adheres to infection-control and hazardous waste policies.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Follows quality control policies and assists in quality assurance documentation.
- Performs tasks efficiently, maintaining a clean area and proper documentation.
- Possesses good knowledge of laboratory computer systems.
- Investigates abnormal test results.
- Communicates results clearly and confidentially.
- Demonstrates procedures to new personnel and assists in technical training.
- Follows safety guidelines and universal precautions.
- Participates in proficiency testing.
- Responsible for all phases of patient testing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a four-year college or university plus a one-year internship in an accredited Medical Technology program.
- Within one year of hire, obtain registration as a Medical Technologist through ASCP, NCA, or AMT.
