Job summary

MD Anderson Cancer Center's Cytopathology team seeks a Medical Technician 1 to prepare and process specimens supporting cancer diagnosis and treatment. You will maintain specimen integrity, assist with specialized procedures, and support daily staining and QC in a busy lab.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in basic science is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years in a clinical medical laboratory or related setting, or equivalent with preferred degree.

Responsibilities

  • Accession and process specimens according to established procedures.
  • Perform cell block and density gradient preparations for lymphoma marker studies.
  • Prepare reagents, set up the stain hood daily, and assist with equipment maintenance.
  • Track specimens in Beaker LIS and document QC/QA measures.
  • Troubleshoot and service laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Complete all work assignments in a timely manner.

Job description

Join MD Anderson's Cytopathology team as a Medical Technician 1 and play an important role in preparing and processing specimens that support accurate cancer diagnosis and treatment. You'll work within a specialized laboratory environment where specimen integrity, accurate identification, quality control, and attention to detail are essential to delivering reliable results for our patients.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performs all job duties in accordance with established protocols

  • Prioritizes and organizes workflow, adjusting to daily workflows to meet productivity goals of the section and performing other duties as required, including transport of case material from various lab locations.
  • Remains knowledgeable of specimen processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving
  • Assists with monitoring and documenting in the inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies

Generates appropriate QC data per guidelines

  • Evaluates specimen integrity and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in accordance with departmental procedures
  • Performs and ensures documentation of all required quality control/quality assurance measures according to established policies and procedures, including instrument controls
  • Cleans and disinfects glassware, laboratory equipment and accessories as needed;

troubleshoots and services equipment according to specific protocols

Complete all work assignments in a timely manner.

  • Accessions and processes specimens according to established procedures, assuring proper identification of specimens at all times
  • Performs technical procedures such as cell block preparations and density gradient preparations for lymphoma marker studies
  • Prepares reagents following precise instructions, sets up the stain hood daily, and assists with equipment maintenance.
  • Performs specimen tracking in Beaker LIS.

EDUCATION

Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Basic science.

Work Experience

Required: 3 years In a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting or with preferred degree, no experience required.
