Job description

The Diagnostic Bone Marrow department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in supporting the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies and other complex blood disorders. This laboratory operates in a fast-paced, highly specialized environment where accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail are essential to delivering high-quality patient care.

This Medical Technician I position offers the opportunity to work closely with laboratory professionals in supporting essential specimen processing and laboratory operations that directly impact diagnostic workflows and patient outcomes. The role is ideal for someone who thrives in a structured, detail-oriented clinical environment and enjoys working as part of a collaborative healthcare team.

In this role, you will perform a variety of specimen accessioning and processing responsibilities, including evaluating specimens, documenting special handling requirements, preparing slides and reagents, and ensuring proper preparation and transport of specimens for testing or referral laboratories. You will play a key role in maintaining specimen integrity and ensuring all materials are accurately documented and tracked throughout the testing process.

You will also support instrumentation and laboratory operations, including operating equipment, performing quality control and calibration procedures, troubleshooting routine equipment issues, and maintaining organized inventory and supply levels to support uninterrupted workflow.

A strong emphasis is placed on teamwork, customer service, and adaptability. You will communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders, assist during high-volume or urgent situations, and contribute to a positive and efficient laboratory environment. This role also includes assisting with training of new staff, students, and fellows while following established procedures and quality standards.

Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a high-volume clinical laboratory setting while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

The hours for this position are 11am - 7:30pm. The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree in a science related field

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
  • Maintains competency testing documentation of all the training provided.
  • Perform assigned duties.
  • Assists in specimen transportation to and from Zayed building.
  • Assists in transportation of specimen in the main campus.
  • Communicates problems with Supervisor.
  • Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co-workers as time permits.
  • Keeps abreast of new procedures and policies.
  • Maintains neat, accurate and complete records according to established policies and procedures.
  • Performs all job duties in accordance with established protocols
  • Correctly receives, accessions, processes, and assures proper identification of specimens.
  • Evaluates specimen integrity and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in accordance with departmental procedure.
  • Acquires and maintains proficiency in departmental functions.
  • Completes all work assignments in a timely manner.
  • Prioritizes and organizes workflow, meeting productivity goals of the section
  • Adjusts to daily workflows and assists daily as needed.
  • Remains knowledgeable of processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving.
  • Assists with monitoring and documenting of the sections inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies.
EDUCATION
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree or

  • Required: 1 year In a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting. No experience required with preferred degree.
