Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work involves providing direct care to patients in a medical/surgical setting at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent performs direct patient care and assists nursing personnel in accommodating patient needs and maintaining continuity of care, under the supervision of a higher-ranking nursing employee. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities
  1. Performs basic and personal care procedures, including feeding, bathing, shaving, changing gowns and linens, assisting with ambulation and range of motion, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination.
  2. Obtains vital signs and notifies supervisor of changes.
  3. Monitors fluid intake and output.
  4. Performs simple treatments, dressing changes, routine specimen collection, venipuncture, 12 Lead ECG, pulse oximetry, and records measurements.
  5. Administers oxygen using appropriate devices.
  6. Applies abdominal binders, pneumatic pumps/leggings, splints, prosthetic devices, antiembolic stockings, and ace wraps.
  7. Cares for patient personal items such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, canes, wheelchairs, and other adaptive devices.
  8. Completes property inventory and secures patient property according to organizational policy.
  9. Provides nutritional care, including passing and collecting diet trays, nourishment, setting up trays, adaptive feeding, and assisting as necessary.
  10. Transports and assists patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds.
  11. Transfers patients from bed to cart/chair/wheelchair and back using transfer assist devices like medical lifts.
  12. Identifies changes in patient condition and notifies supervisor.
  13. Distributes clean linens and makes beds.
  14. Assists in discharging and transferring patients from medical/surgical units.
  15. Provides post-mortem care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

Good knowledge of nursing standards; working knowledge of infection control; skill in nursing techniques; caring attitude; ability to operate patient care equipment; effective communication skills; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to establish effective relationships; sound judgment; capable of performing essential functions with or without accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalency and one year of direct patient care experience, or
  2. Thirty semester credit hours from an approved school of professional nursing, or
  3. Completion of a course in a state-approved practical nursing program, or
  4. Completion of a certificate program as a medical or medical office assistant from an accredited college or university.
Special Requirements

Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an ECMCC-approved provider within 60 days of appointment and maintained throughout employment.

Note: Credentials from outside the U.S. require verification of equivalency. Verifiable part-time or volunteer experience will be pro-rated.
