Distinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves providing direct nursing care to psychiatric patients in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) and in-patient behavioral health unit at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent provides routine care to patients in accordance with policies and regulations of local, state, and federal authorities, as well as accepted standards of practice. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
Good knowledge of current mental health care practices; standard care techniques including Level I and Level III Observation; human relations skills; understanding of patient rights under mental hygiene laws and criminal procedure; ability to identify changes in patient condition; maintain a safe, calm, therapeutic environment; operate hospital equipment; follow oral and written instructions; establish effective working relationships; demonstrate initiative, emotional maturity, and flexibility; capable of performing essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
High school diploma or equivalency, plus either:
Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an ECMCC-approved provider within 60 days of appointment, maintained throughout employment; completion of NY State Office of Mental Health-Bureau of Education and Workforce Development (BEWD) certified safety program within 3 months of appointment, with annual re-training; and compliance with child abuse/maltreatment reporting laws. All applicants will be asked to sign a clearance form prior to hiring; refusal will result in non-selection.
Verifiable part-time or volunteer experience will be prorated towards full-time experience requirements.
