Job description

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Indianapolis VA Medical Center, is seeking motivated individuals to join their team as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant. The Medical Center is hiring at multiple locations with varying tour of duties.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. All other requirements must be met within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and Education:
    • Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR,
    • Education: One year above high school; OR,
    • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Grade Determination: In addition to meeting basic requirements listed above, the applicant must possess at least one year of experience at or equivalent to work at the next lower level, GS-5 (Full Performance level), that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the work of the position.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Candidates must demonstrate, in their resume, all of the KSAs below:

  1. Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met.
  2. Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
  3. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers. This includes preparing reports in various formats, presenting data, and resolving patient concerns.
  4. Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, including scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals.
  5. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures related to interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or community operational activities affecting patient flow and support functions, including appointment cycles, outside referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, and provider availability.
  6. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical language utilized by clinicians.

  • Physical requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. There may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items such as papers, books, small parts, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
