The purpose of a Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health is to support our primary care providers with clinical documentation, enabling them to focus on delivering exceptional patient care. Scribes assist throughout the patient care process—participating in morning huddles to plan the day's visits, observing and documenting in the exam room, and following up post-visit to facilitate next steps. These team members serve as clinical documentation assistants, internally referred to as CISs (Clinic Informatics Specialists), highlighting their crucial role in ensuring accurate, detailed, and timely documentation. In addition to real-time documentation, Scribes develop expertise in our value-based care model and the management of chronic conditions, including ICD-10 and CPT coding. They leverage this knowledge to help providers identify and address care gaps. Scribes undergo extensive on-the-job training covering clinical workflows, value-based medicine, preventative care, population health data, and team-based care. Given the importance of their role, candidates should be committed to at least 1-2 years in this position. This role offers a valuable opportunity for pre-med students to gain practical, paid clinical experience before applying to MD/DO/PA/NP programs, as well as for those pursuing careers in Health Informatics, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Medical Coding, and related fields.
