Job Description Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific position. The MSL's key objective is to impact clinical practice within the assigned territory, leading to improved patient outcomes. The MSL must demonstrate deep therapeutic expertise, understand territory and market influences, engage scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manage and develop their territory, and execute all relevant activities aligned with the medical strategic and tactical plan — while adhering to the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance policies, and Working Practice documents. The MSL will inform and shape medical strategy by collecting impactful insights and understanding their strategic potential.

This territory covers WI, MN, ND, and SD. The preferred location for the candidate is Minneapolis, Milwaukee, or Madison. Residency within 50 miles of the territory border is required; relocation is not available.

Role Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • The MSL will leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build relationships with HCPs (including community physicians, pharmacists, medical experts, nurses, and other healthcare professionals) and thought leaders in the area, aligned with the medical strategy.
  • The primary responsibility is to engage with customers through activities such as emerging data discussions, clinical trial support, understanding patient journey barriers, exploring unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, disease and product education, adverse event reporting, and capturing medical insights across the product lifecycle.
  • Demonstrate strategic territory vision by identifying key stakeholders, mapping, planning Medical Engagements (MEs), and Key Accounts in collaboration with internal teams, including:
    • Identifying influential stakeholders across the product development lifecycle for education and partnership strategies.
    • Seeking partnership opportunities with academic centers and systems of care to drive impact.
    • Engaging HCPs or MEs when specific medical needs are identified, such as publications or clinical trial participation.
    • Collaborating internally with teams to advance therapeutic, clinical, or product goals.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Providing clinical trial support and working cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations.
  • Collaborating with internal colleagues (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, sales) to promote clinical practice improvements, maintaining customer focus and compliance.
  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic area and Novartis products to serve as a resource for customers and colleagues.
  • Staying updated on policies, regulations, and laws affecting daily responsibilities.
  • Completing administrative tasks (CRM updates, expense reports, training) timely and accurately.
  • Championing emerging responsibilities and evolving territory needs.
  • Proactively pursuing personal and professional development.

Compensation: The pay range at start is approximately $166,400 - $249,600 for Managers and $183,200 - $274,800 for ADs, subject to market fluctuations and individual factors. The total package may include bonuses, stock, benefits, and other incentives. Final salary decisions depend on experience, skills, and location.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD, etc.).
  • Experience levels vary by role:
    • Manager: 0-3 years in a Field Medical role or 3-5 years in medical affairs or clinical research.
    • AD: Minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role or 5-7 years in medical or clinical settings.

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong clinical knowledge, including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, research processes, and FDA regulations.
  • Adherence to laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Residency within the specified territory or within 50 miles of the border.
  • Approximately 60-70% travel required.
