Job Description Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific position. The MSL's key objective is to impact clinical practice within the assigned territory, leading to improved patient outcomes. The MSL must demonstrate deep therapeutic expertise, understand territory and market influences, engage scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manage and develop their territory, and execute activities aligned with the medical strategic and tactical plan, all while adhering to the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance policies, and Working Practice documents. The MSL will inform and shape medical strategy by collecting impactful insights and understanding their strategic potential.

This territory covers WI, MN, ND, and SD. The preferred location for the candidate is within 50 miles of Minneapolis, Milwaukee, or Madison. Relocation is not available.

Role Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  1. The MSL will leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish professional relationships and engage with HCPs and thought leaders in the geographical area as aligned with medical strategy.
  2. The primary responsibility is to engage with customers through discussions on emerging data, clinical trials, patient journey barriers, market dynamics, unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, disease state education, adverse event capture, and medical insights collection throughout the product lifecycle.
  3. Demonstrate strategic territory vision, including:
  • Identification of key stakeholders influencing the patient journey and disease space throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Opportunities for partnerships with academic centers and systems of care.
  • Involvement of HCPs or MEs when specific medical needs are identified.
  • Internal collaboration opportunities to advance therapeutic area, clinical, or product goals.
  • Provide clinical trial support, facilitating relevant medical activities and collaborating cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, sales) to advance clinical practice while maintaining customer centricity and compliance.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic area and Novartis compounds to serve as a medical resource.
  • Stay informed of policies and regulations affecting day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Complete administrative tasks and training promptly, including CRM profiling and data management.
  • Champion emerging responsibilities as priorities evolve and proactively develop professionally.
  • Compensation and Benefits

    The salary range at start is expected to be $166,400 - $249,600 for Managers and $183,200 - $274,800 for ADs, with potential adjustments based on market and individual factors. The total package may include bonuses, stock units, benefits, and other incentives. Employment is at-will, with company rights to modify compensation.

    Job Requirements

    • Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD, etc.).
    • Experience for Manager Level: 0-3 years in a Field Medical position or 3-5 years in medical affairs/clinical research; prior experience in the therapeutic area is preferred.
    • Experience for AD Level: Minimum of 3 years in a Field Medical role or 5-7 years in medical affairs/clinical research; prior experience in the therapeutic area is preferred.
    • Strong clinical knowledge, including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, research processes, and regulatory guidelines.
    • Must adhere to legal, regulatory, and company policies, promoting diversity and inclusion.
    • Field-based with residence within the territory or within 50 miles of the border; travel (60-70%) required.
