Job Description Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific position. The MSL's key objective is to create impact by advancing clinical practice within the assigned territory, leading to improved patient outcomes. The MSL must demonstrate deep therapeutic expertise, understand territory and market influences, engage scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manage and develop their territory, and execute all relevant activities in alignment with the medical strategic and tactical plan. All activities must adhere to the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance policies, and Working Practice documents. The MSL will inform and shape medical strategy by collecting impactful and actionable insights, understanding their potential strategic impact.

This territory covers West Virginia. The preferred location for the candidate is Charleston or Morgantown, WV, or Lexington, KY. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the territory border; relocation is not available.

Role Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  1. The MSL will leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build professional relationships and engage with HCPs and other thought leaders in the geographical area, aligned with medical strategy.
  2. The primary responsibility is to engage with customers through activities such as: emerging data discussions, clinical trial activities, understanding barriers in the patient journey, exploring unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, disease and product education, and capturing adverse events and medical insights throughout the product lifecycle.
  3. Demonstrate strategic territory vision and ensure appropriate identification, mapping, and planning of Medical Engagements (MEs) and Key Accounts in collaboration with internal colleagues. This includes:
    1. Identifying key stakeholders influencing the patient journey and disease space throughout the product development lifecycle.
    2. Identifying partnership opportunities with academic centers, centers of excellence, and systems of care.
    3. Involving HCPs or MEs when specific medical needs are identified.
    4. Collaborating internally with other Novartis stakeholders to advance therapeutic area, clinical, or product goals.
  4. Provide clinical trial support for company-sponsored trials, working cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations.
  5. Collaborate effectively with internal teams (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, sales) to promote clinical practice while maintaining customer centricity and compliance.
  6. Maintain in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic area and Novartis compounds to serve as a medical resource internally and externally.
  7. Stay informed about internal policies and external regulations affecting day-to-day responsibilities.
  8. Complete administrative responsibilities and training promptly, including CRM updates and profiling customers.
  9. Champion emerging responsibilities as priorities evolve and proactively pursue personal and professional development.

The pay range at commencement is approximately $166,400 - $249,600 for Managers and $183,200 - $274,800 for Associate Directors, subject to market fluctuations, experience, and location. The total compensation may include bonuses, stock units, benefits, and other elements. Employment is at-will, and salary adjustments may occur.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD, etc).

Experience for Manager Level:

  • 0-3 years in a Field Medical role or as an MSL, or
  • 3-5 years in medical affairs, clinical research, or related fields, with prior experience in the therapeutic area preferred.

Experience for AD Level:

  • Minimum 3 years in a Field Medical position or as an MSL, or
  • 5-7 years in medical affairs, clinical research, or related fields, with prior experience in the therapeutic area preferred.

All levels require:

  • Strong clinical knowledge, including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, clinical research, and FDA regulations.
  • Compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Work within ethics, compliance, and promotional policies.
  • Promote a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Residency within the territory or reasonable commuting distance (50 miles).
  • Approximately 60-70% travel required.
