Job summary

Prime Healthcare is seeking a Health Information Management Technician I to serve as the hospital’s release of information contact. You will process requests for health information, ensure HIPAA compliance, and support coding and vital records reporting using Epic EMR at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, AL.

The role includes chart accuracy checks, document corrections with care teams, and timely handling of complex requests to meet regulatory timelines.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Experience with accurate alphabetic and numeric filing, preferred.
• One year hospital experience, preferred.
• Knowledge of terminal digit filing and medical terminology, preferred.
• Computer data entry with 10-key, with accurate typing speed of 35 wpm, preferred.
• Completion of a medical terminology course, preferred.
• Background in business and office training, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Ensure patient charts are complete and accurate by checking for missing reports, unsigned orders, and incomplete discharge summaries, and work with providers to resolve issues.
• Perform chart analysis and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and staff to correct documentation so records support quality care and billing.
• Process requests for medical records from patients, attorneys, insurers, and government agencies while safeguarding information under HIPAA and hospital policies.
• Handle complex or legal requests such as subpoenas, audits, or court orders, making sure all are addressed within required timeframes and properly documented.
• Monitor compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, state laws, and hospital policies by reviewing data and preparing records for audits or inspections.
• Use EMR systems like Epic to update and maintain records, resolve data issues and support coding and vital records reporting.

Location: RiverviewRegional Medical Center – Gadsden, AL

Health Information Management Technician I, also referred to as a HIM Tech, Release of Information Cleark or Medical Records Technician. The Health Information Management Technician(HIM Tech) serve as the hospital’s designated contact for all requests to release patient health information, including legal medical records and fetal monitor strips. This role ensures requests from patients, third parties, providers, and legal entities are processed within mandated timeframes while maintaining compliance with HIPAA, state laws, and hospital policies. The position also handles accurate billing, records all disclosure transactions, and provides backup support to HIM Tech I as needed.
