Job description

Spectrum Eye Physicians is one of the largest and most established ophthalmology and optometry practices in the Bay Area, with eight locations throughout Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties. A family-oriented group with roots in the region dating back to the 1960s, Spectrum is committed to providing exceptional, comprehensive eye care in a collaborative and supportive environment.

We are currently seeking a skilled, medically oriented Optometrist to join our team part-time (approximately 2.5 days / 5 half-day sessions per week). This role is designed to support our oculoplastic surgery pipeline by managing medical clinic, diagnostics, and perioperative care.

Position Overview

The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical acumen in ocular surface disease, adnexal pathology, and medical optometry. Operating in a highly collaborative, fast-paced setting, you will work hand-in-hand with our ophthalmology staff to manage complex medical cases, run diagnostic schedules, and absorb routine post-operative checks. This position will be supported by a dedicated clinical technician to maximize throughput and efficiency.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Medical E/M Management: Evaluate and treat adult patients presenting with non-incisional adnexal and ocular surface pathologies, including severe dry eye, thyroid eye disease, blepharitis, and chalazia.
  • Oculoplastic Co-Management: Oversee routine, non-billable 90-day global post-operative follow-up templates for functional and cosmetic eyelid, lacrimal, and orbital surgeries.
  • Advanced Diagnostic Execution: Interpret and bill for targeted technical diagnostics, specifically extended visual fields (full field as well as taped/untaped), external ocular photography, and anterior segment OCTs.
  • Non-Incisional Procedures: Independently perform and bill for minor office interventions within the California optometric scope, including punctal plug insertions, mechanical epilation for trichiasis, therapeutic lacrimal probing/irrigation, and intralesional steroid injections for chronic chalazia.
  • Oculoplastic Surgical Pipeline Support: Identify, screen, and refer appropriate surgical candidates (e.g., dermatochalasis, symptomatic ectropion/entropion, ptosis, lid lesions) directly to our oculoplastic surgical schedules.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Maintain highly accurate, timely electronic medical records (EHR) documentation and ensure all medical billing is submitted in full compliance with current Medicare and commercial PPO guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Active license to practice optometry in the State of California with full Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents (TPA) certification.
  • Demonstrated interest or specialized experience in medical optometry, ocular disease management, or surgical co-management.
  • Strong collaborative communication skills and the ability to work seamlessly within an integrated MD/OD model.
What We Offer
  • Competitive, structured daily or shift-based compensation.
  • A dedicated, assigned clinical technician to facilitate efficient pre-testing and workups.
  • A fully equipped, state-of-the-art diagnostic lane footprint.
  • A professional, collaborative work environment with a direct line of communication to board-certified ophthalmic surgeons.
