Job summary

Carilion Clinic is seeking a Medical Office Technician for the Vascular Surgery area on a FLEX schedule in Roanoke. The role supports both clinical and administrative tasks in a busy outpatient clinic, with responsibilities ranging from patient greeting to basic laboratory work.

Shifts are Tue–Thu 8:30a–5p, with duties including specimen collection, EMR use, and coordination with clinical staff to ensure quality patient care.

Qualifications

Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
Federal drug screen collector credential within 6 months of hire.
AHA BLS-HCP within first 90 days of hire.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
Detail-oriented with dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Proficient in electronic medical records and clerical procedures.
Clerical, medical terminology knowledge preferred.

Responsibilities

Greet patients and create a positive experience as they move through the clinic.
Perform HAA duties and Clinical Assistant tasks as described in job descriptions.
Conduct in-house waived testing based on equipment, training, and competency.
Maintain laboratory area without supervision; manage supplies and equipment.
Obtain patient specimens using appropriate technique and label properly.
Verify patient ID and orders for accuracy; review history for blood draws.
Perform venipuncture site assessment and safety procedures.
Prepare samples for transport to reference labs with proper labeling.
Report abnormal results to physicians/clinical team members.
Maintain equipment, QC, calibration, and regulatory documents.
Assist nursing staff with patient care and transport between areas.
Stay up-to-date with guidelines and regulatory standards.

This position is FLEX working hours between Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30a-5p

Creates a positive experience for our patients by welcoming and assisting the patient as they move throughout the clinic.
Performs HAA job duties, as detailed in the HAA job description.
Performs Clinical Assistant job duties, as detailed in the Clinical Assistant job description.
Performs waived and other testing inhouse based upon equipment available, documented training and competency.
Must be able to maintain laboratory without supervision.
Obtains patient specimen using appropriate equipment and technique.
Verifies patient identification and order ensuring accuracy.
Reviews pertinent patient history associated with blood draws.
Assess most appropriate blood draw site, selecting gauge needle, site preparation and appropriate pressure after venipuncture.
Observes safety regulations and universal precautions in collection, processing, and disposal of laboratory specimens.
Prepares samples for transport to reference laboratories ensuring all specimens are properly labeled and order matches specimen.
Reports abnormal or critical results to the appropriate physician/ACP or clinical team member.
Cleaning, maintaining, performing QC's and calibrating laboratory equipment within the practice and as appropriate to education and training. Reports equipment malfunctions to the practice manager or designee. Maintains required COLA and CLIA documents.
Maintains neat, clean and well stocked work area; assist with ordering, dating, and sorting laboratory supplies.
Order laboratory supplies from appropriate sources, as needed.
Participates in training of clinical staff, x-ray technicians and physicians/ACPs in basic office laboratory procedures.
Assists nursing personnel in patient care and transport to/from examination rooms, laboratory, x-ray and waiting area.
Maintains competency in all areas of responsibility, in part, by reviewing new and revised guidelines, procedures and policies.
Acquires and maintain knowledge of current regulatory standards and assist with conformance of standards.

What We Require:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: N/A

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Velocity Care will require employee to obtain federal drug screen collector credential and federal breath alcohol technician certification within 6 months of hire.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required within first 90 days of hire.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication, and team-work skills required. Must have keen attention to detail, superb dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be organized and self-motivated. Must become proficient in use of electronic medical record, clinical and clerical office procedures and equipment. Clerical, medical terminology knowledge preferred.

Compensation Range:

$16.18 - $22.65

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
