Hutzel Women’s Hospital is nationally recognized for research in high-risk obstetrics, infertility, reproductive genetics, neonatology, maternal fetal medicine, midwifery, gynecology, urogynecology, menopause, and other women’s health services. With over 150 years of history, it is Michigan’s first hospital for women and a leader in women’s health research and education. It is home to the Perinatology Research Branch of the NIH.

Summary / Description

Under general supervision, performs duties as a Medical Office Assistant and Patient Services Assistant, including greeting visitors, registering patients, contacting insurance providers, scheduling, and assisting physicians with patient examinations.

  1. Greet visitors, answer calls, and direct them appropriately.
  2. Register patients, collect demographic and insurance data.
  3. Contact insurance providers for benefit verification, collect payments, and prepare deposits.
  4. Prepare and file patient charts and documents.
  5. Assist during patient examinations, prepare exam rooms, handle instruments.
  6. Take vital signs and document patient information.
  7. Perform procedures such as injections, venipuncture, EKGs, stress tests, x-rays, PFTs, etc.
  8. Obtain referrals and schedule appointments or procedures.
  9. Manage billing records and communicate with billing companies.
  10. Support activities like preparing lab slips, typing, and training staff.
  11. Follow safety policies and participate in safety training, including CPR.

Skills Required

  • Analytical skills for patient issues, insurance verification, billing, and data compilation.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients and staff.
  • Ability to handle mental and visual tasks related to billing and insurance review.
  • Knowledge of blood pressure measurement techniques.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, completion of a practical nursing program, PCA/PCT program, Nurse Assistant program, Medical Assistant program, EMT, phlebotomy training, or relevant experience in a medical setting. Medical Assistant certification is preferred. Six months of direct patient care experience is preferred, with one year of experience in Medical Assistant or clerical duties in a medical office also preferred.
