Job Duties

The Medical Office Assistant in Patient Support Services at UWM’s Student Health and Wellness Center provides administrative and customer service support in a healthcare setting. This position helps ensure smooth daily operations while delivering high-quality service to patients and staff.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day operational support to medical work unit personnel
  • Prepares documents for patient admissions and appointments
  • Serves as front desk staff within a healthcare facility or clinic
  • Greets patients, schedules appointments, maintains calendars, schedules tests, and makes referrals according to instructions
  • Receives, submits, and responds to inquiries according to established policies and procedures
Department

The Student Health and Wellness Center is a recognized and accredited leader in student health providing excellent health care in partnership with the campus community. The mission of the Student Health and Wellness Center is to assist students in identifying, understanding and responding to current health issues through medical and mental health care and health promotion programs; and to assist the UWM campus community through collaborative partnerships designed to enhance the university’s academic and community service mission.

Compensation

Starting salary between $18.00-$20.00/hour (Final offer will be determined by experience, education and qualifications at the time of hire). This position also offers an excellent benefit package, including health insurance, paid sick leave, personal, vacation and legal holiday time off as well as contribution towards the cost of several other employee benefits, including a pension.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience working in a customer/client-facing support role within an office environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using electronic health record system(s)
  • Experience in customer service with problem solving situations both in person and over the phone
  • Experience working with a young adult, underserved, diverse population within a fast paced, constantly changing environment
  • Demonstrated experience obtaining information while protecting and maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of the work within a healthcare office environment
  • Demonstrated ability receiving/handling money, crediting patient accounts electronically, balancing monies at end of shift
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting and/or standing) for extended periods while performing administrative, patient service, or computer-based work.
  • Ability to frequently move throughout a clinic or office to greet patients, escort patients, deliver materials, or retrieve supplies.
  • Ability to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse, telephone, copier, scanner, and other standard office equipment for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to read printed materials and electronic medical records, and accurately enter information into computer systems.
  • Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, reach, kneel, or squat to retrieve files, office supplies, or equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull office supplies, records, or equipment weighing up to 10–20 pounds.
