Children’s Hospital of Michigan is a leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine, offering services including general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular surgery. The hospital features advanced imaging technology such as PET and MRI, and is a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and burn center. It provides care through Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Michigan - Troy, and six ambulatory sites.

Summary / Description

Note: Refer to Medical Office Assistant Scope of Practice addendum, attached.

Under general supervision, performs duties of a Medical Assistant and Patient Services Assistant. Greets visitors, registers patients, contacts insurance providers, and schedules appointments. Assists physicians during examinations, prepares exam rooms, takes vital signs, and performs related medical procedures.

  • Greets visitors, answers calls, and directs them appropriately.
  • Registers patients, obtaining demographic and insurance data.
  • Contacts insurance providers for benefit information, posts payments, and prepares deposits.
  • Prepares and files patient records, releases information as needed.
  • Assists during patient examinations, prepares exam rooms, handles instruments.
  • Records vital signs and patient visit reasons.
  • Performs procedures such as injections, venipuncture, EKGs, stress tests, x-rays, PFTs, etc.
  • Obtains referrals and schedules procedures.
  • Reviews and corrects billing records, communicates with billing company.
  • Supports other activities like lab slips, correspondence, training.
  • Follows safety policies, participates in safety training including CPR.

Skills Required

  • Analytical skills for patient issues, insurance review, billing research, data compilation.
  • Effective communication with patients, staff, physicians.
  • Ability to handle some mental/visual strain.
  • Knowledge of blood pressure techniques.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduation from practical nursing, or completion of PCA/PCT, Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, or Phlebotomy training with six months of patient care experience.
  • One year of Medical Assistant or Patient Care Associate experience.
  • One year of clerical experience in a medical setting.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
