Job Description - Medical Office Assistant Immunization Station Grant Part Time Days (2506000414)

Children’s Hospital of Michigan is an international leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Surgical services include general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular. Advanced diagnostic services such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and MRI are available. The hospital's Emergency Department is a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and a dedicated pediatric burn center, providing care for thousands of children annually across multiple sites.

Summary / Description

Note: Refer to the Medical Office Assistant Scope of Practice addendum, attached.

Under general supervision, performs duties of a Medical Assistant and Patient Services Assistant, including greeting visitors, registering patients, contacting insurance providers, and scheduling appointments. Assists physicians during examinations by preparing exam rooms, taking vital signs, and handling instruments.

  1. Greet visitors, answer calls, and direct them appropriately.
  2. Register patients and collect demographic and insurance information.
  3. Contact insurance providers to verify benefits and co-pays; process payments and prepare deposits.
  4. Prepare and manage patient charts and medical records.
  5. Assist physicians during examinations and procedures.
  6. Record vital signs and document patient visit reasons.
  7. Perform medical procedures such as injections, venipuncture, EKGs, and assist with stress tests and X-rays.
  8. Obtain referrals and schedule follow-up appointments.
  9. Manage billing records, including payments and rejections.
  10. Perform support duties like preparing lab slips, data entry, and training staff.
  11. Adhere to safety standards and participate in safety training, including CPR.

Skills Required

  • Analytical skills for handling patient issues and billing problems.
  • Effective communication with patients and staff.
  • Ability to handle visual and mental tasks such as reviewing insurance and posting payments.
  • Knowledge of blood pressure measurement techniques.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduation from a practical nursing program, or completion of PCA/PCT, Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, or Phlebotomy training programs, or equivalent experience.
  • Six months of direct patient care experience (preferred).
  • One year of experience in Medical Assistant or Patient Care Associate roles.
  • Experience with medical office clerical duties such as insurance verification, billing, and EMR use.
  • Medical Assistant certification (preferred).
