Responsibilities

The Medical Office Assistant I serves as the first point of contact for patients within the Bassett Healthcare Network. This is a key role in the patient-centered care team. Demonstrates excellence in all patient and customer encounters including face-to-face and telephone interactions. Ensures a high-quality patient experience by providing administrative support to ambulatory patient care teams through excellent customer service, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills. Responsible for providing clear, accurate, and timely communication to nurses and providers regarding patients. Also responsible for accurate scheduling, collecting demographic and financial information, and may have direct revenue responsibilities such as payment collection and insurance verification.

  • Reception/Call Handling: Greet patients courteously, provide necessary informational packets, handle emergent situations, answer phones promptly with proper greeting, take accurate messages, and offer MyBassett sign-up opportunities.
  • Registration/Appointment Scheduling/Referrals: Complete registration, confirm and update demographic and insurance data, support appointment scheduling, and process referrals and authorizations efficiently.
  • Collection of Payment/Cash Handling: Communicate payment due, process payments accurately, and maintain balanced cash drawer.
  • Office Support/Cross Coverage/Confidentiality: Manage patient information, support documentation and scanning, handle correspondence, and ensure confidentiality. Assist with office supplies and support other locations as needed.
Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred; 2-year/Associate Degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum one year relevant work experience required; customer service experience preferred. An associate degree may substitute for one year of experience.

Skills: Computer proficiency, customer service, time management, confidentiality, interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements
  • Sedentary work involving lifting up to 10 lbs., sitting most of the time, with occasional physical activity.
  • Repetitive motions, grasping, lifting, reaching, and visual acuity required.
Hazards
  • Occasional exposure to bodily fluids/bloodborne pathogens.
Travel
  • No travel required.
