Job summary

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT) to join our rural Laboratory team in Guttenberg, Iowa. You will collect and process specimens, perform a variety of tests, and ensure accurate results with strict QC per CLIA guidelines.

The role welcomes candidates with an accredited MLT/MT program or a relevant science degree, plus MLT/MT certification and current BLS.

Qualifications

• Completed an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist program, or a qualifying science degree.
• MLT/MT certification through ASCP or equivalent.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and quality control standards.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Excellent communication and ability to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

• Collect, prepare, and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, and other samples.
• Perform chemistry, hematology, microbiology and other diagnostic tests per procedures.
• Perform blood banking procedures according to applicable standards.
• Conduct quality control and proficiency testing in line with CLIA guidelines.
• Analyze, verify, and communicate laboratory results accurately and efficiently.
• Prepare specimens for reference laboratory testing and transport.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and analyzers.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.

What You'll Do

• Collect, prepare, and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, and other biological samples.

• Perform a variety of laboratory tests, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and other diagnostic testing within established procedures.

• Perform blood banking procedures in accordance with applicable standards.

• Conduct quality control and proficiency testing in compliance with CLIA guidelines.

• Analyze, verify, and communicate laboratory results accurately and efficiently.

• Prepare specimens for reference laboratory testing and transport.

• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and analyzers.

• Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.

• Follow established safety, infection control, HIPAA, and regulatory requirements.

• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support excellent patient care.

What We're Looking For

• Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist program, or an applicable degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science meeting position qualification requirements.

• MLT or MT certification through a recognized credentialing organization such as ASCP, as applicable to the position.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

• Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures, medical terminology, and quality control standards.

• Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and organizational skills.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.

• Ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining accuracy and patient safety.

• Previous healthcare or laboratory experience preferred but not required.
