Job summary

St. James Parish Hospital in Lutcher, LA is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Technician to perform comprehensive lab analyses including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank testing.

The role requires careful adherence to established policies and patient identification protocols. Qualified candidates hold an Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science and are certified as MLT/CLT with an active Louisiana license or eligibility.

Qualifications

• Associate degree from an accredited program in Medical Technology/MLS/CLSLT.
• Certified MLT or MLT-CTLS as applicable in state.
• Current active BLS certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Perform chemical, hematology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank analysis per policies.
• Order and receive lab tests in LIS; process and analyze samples.
• Ensure quality testing and instrument performance per regulatory guidelines.
• Ventipunture and specimen handling per age-specific protocols.
• Maintain organized, clean work area and proper inventory.

Description

Responsible for performing chemical, hematology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank analysis in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Job Duties:

• Orders lab test accurately in the LIS computer system
• Receives lab samples in the LIS computer system for processing
• Process and analyze lab samples appropriately for each lab department
• Ensures quality lab testing and instrument performance adheres to regulatory compliance guidelines
• Collect drug screens using correct form and generate correct charge
• Label and handle lab specimens properly
• Performs venipuncture to obtain blood sample using appropriate type of equipment to adjust to patient age.
• Use two identifiers to identify patients when collecting samples
• Ensures supplies are well stocked in all areas. Monitor inventory and submit requests for supply orders to be processed by Material Management
• Always answers phone using proper phone courtesy
• Maintains an organized and clean working area
• Research and resolve problems with lab samples and test reports by looking up patient results in the LIS computer system and fax to proper personnel
• Supports departmental goals and objectives
• Other related duties as assigned

• Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician
• Current Louisiana State License as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician
• Active BLS certification or able to obtain in 90 days

Physical Activity Requirements:

• Mental and visual acuity is essential for this job; the ability to discern and differentiate colors by demonstration of successful colorblindness assessment is required.
• Lifting 20 # maximum, frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 10 #; walking and/or standing required frequently.

Work Schedule: Various 6-hour shifts, varying weekend rotation
