Job Summary

A clinical laboratory technician performing high complexity testing tasks, maintaining quality controls, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensures specimens received are acceptable for testing by applying the appropriate criteria.
  • Receives, processes, and distributes laboratory specimens.
  • Applies criteria for specimen rejection as applicable.
  • Follows hospital/laboratory safety and infection control policies and reports variances to section supervisors.
  • Follows universal precautions when handling blood or body fluids.
  • Handles biohazardous and chemically hazardous materials per safety guidelines.
  • Disinfects workspace at appropriate frequencies per quality manual.
  • Ensures proper packaging and disposal of waste chemicals and maintains documentation.
  • Operates primary and secondary instrumentation proficiently.
  • Changes or prepares reagents, controls, and documents per policy.
  • Prepares specimens for testing per policy and procedure.
  • Reports test results within established department turn‑around times after verifying documentation.
  • Performs up to high‑complexity testing accurately and timely in designated laboratory sections.
  • Floats between laboratory sections and assists in other areas as workflow demands arise.
  • Maintains working knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, protocols, and processes.
  • Calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment.
  • Troubleshoots basic instrument malfunctions and documents appropriately.
  • Determines when to contact an instrument’s service representative for assistance.
  • Analyzes quality control material for each procedure, records values, and reports out‑of‑limit results to the technical supervisor.
  • Performs comparison studies of precision, accuracy, and linearity on new or existing procedures and reports results by established deadlines.
  • Accurately records proficiency surveys.
  • Reviews results for accuracy before verification.
  • Documents critical call value notifications and investigates delta checks as appropriate.
  • Investigates unexpected or abnormal results as needed.
  • Routes electronic results, forms, and copies within the specified time frame.
  • Performs all aspects of reagent quality control per the manuals.
  • Manages inventory levels for testing and escalates to leads as needed.
  • Ensures continuous operations in testing of specimens across laboratory sections.
  • Maintains competencies per CLIA frequency guidelines.
  • Assists in clinical orientation and training of new or less skilled laboratory personnel as requested by the supervisor.
  • Assists with students, interns, or resident clinical education.
  • Performs duties within the scope of practice as assigned in routine, unusual, or emergency situations.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree of Applied Science from an accredited program.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLS‑Technician) license from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • For temporary licensure employees, a copy of the national certification exam report must be submitted before the temporary license expires.
  • A permanent license must be obtained within one year of hire.
