Job summary

WVU Medicine St. Joseph's Hospital is seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Technician to perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests across disciplines in accordance with licensure and SOPs.

The role requires performing quality control, instrument maintenance, phlebotomy, and accurate reporting of results while adhering to safety and infection control standards. The candidate should hold an AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology or related science with WV HCTP or trainee licensure and prefer

Qualifications

• AAS or equivalent in medical laboratory technology or related science.
• WV High Complexity Testing Personnel license or trainee license required.
• Certification as MLT preferred (ASCP or AMT).

Responsibilities

• Process and analyze samples accurately and efficiently.
• Set up, run, and maintain laboratory instruments per policy.
• Perform quality control and infection control procedures.
• Perform phlebotomy procedures when needed.
• Document and report findings to nurses/physicians.
• Collaborate with healthcare staff to interpret lab results.
• Perform routine lab tests in designated areas.
• Maintain accurate patient and specimen records.

Perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests within scope of licensure in all laboratory disciplines by standard operating policies and procedures. Understand method principles, perform quality control, perform preventative maintenance, review, and analyze results as to accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE

• Associate of Science (AAS) degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or Science OR Associate’s degree is a chemical or biological science.
• Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:

PA: No state license issued

WV: High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License OR Trainee License issued by the WV Department of Health

MD: No state license issued

OH: No state license issued

Preferredqualifications

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE

• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Experience

• Experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

• Interact with other healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results within the framework of medical technology.
• Perform routine and basic laboratory testing within a designated area in the clinical laboratory.
• Recognize testing inconsistency and takes appropriate corrective action.
• Maintain all patent and specimen records accurately, neatly, and legibly.
• Follow hospital, state, and federal guidelines for ensuring a safe environment for workers, patients, and public.
• Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.
• Communicate and interact with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff, and the public in general, in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for their individual needs.
