Job description

Responsibilities

Job Summary: Accurately analyzes and reports all tests ordered by the Medical Staff in a timely manner and according to laboratory procedures and regulatory guidelines to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities:

  1. Perform lab test procedures on patient specimens adhering to the Section’s Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accurate, timely reporting, in alignment with local and state requirements.
  2. Provide excellent patient care through clinical correlation of results, identification of patterns of bias, rapid notification of appropriate caregivers of critical values, and completion of testing within established turn-around-time limits.
  3. Ensure that major automated equipment is operational by performing required maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and contacting vendors for assistance or repairs.
  4. Perform calibration and quality control procedures, maintaining records to ensure tests are within established parameters.
  5. Participate in proficiency testing and review results with laboratory clinical leaders.
  6. Assist in evaluating and generating documentation for the validation of new procedures and equipment to ensure the most current laboratory technology is available to physicians.
  7. Engage in continuing education, training, and teaching to enhance technical skills of colleagues, students, and trainees.
  8. Manage inventory of supplies, monitor stock levels, assist with ordering, and organize received supplies.
  9. Complete all work efficiently, resolving or passing ongoing issues to incoming staff within the scheduled shift.
  10. Represent CommonSpirit Health professionally and kindly in all communications with physicians, staff, patients, and stakeholders across various interactions.
  11. Adhere to all regulatory requirements.
Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s Degree in biological or chemical sciences as defined by CLIA OR
  • High school diploma/GED with completed military medical laboratory course and the occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Lab Technician).

Required Licensure and Certifications:

  • California: MLT:CA
  • Nevada: MLT:NV
  • North Dakota: MLT-L:ND
  • Tennessee: MLT-L:TN or MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification
  • Georgia: MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification
  • Other states: not required

Preferred Certification: MLT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training:

  • Appropriate training in clinical laboratory science as judged by the Director of the Clinical Laboratory.
