General Summary of Position
Performs routine and specialized assays, providing technical advice and information in point of care and emergency clinical laboratories to support disease diagnosis and treatment. Analyzes body fluids, cells, and products to identify abnormal and critical disorders related to disease processes. Serves as a knowledge expert and technical consultant in the specialty area(s).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluates specimen adequacy for testing; obtains specimens for quantitative and qualitative analyses.
- Reviews and verifies test results, follows up on abnormal/unusual results, and communicates findings to relevant personnel. Completes all required documentation accurately.
- Performs routine and specialized testing in assigned area, correlates laboratory findings with disease stage, and integrates data from other laboratory specialties. Confirms abnormal results and specimen discrepancies, and initiates appropriate follow-up procedures.
- Conducts daily quality control and assurance measures to ensure limits are maintained. Reports quality issues to supervisor and evaluates proficiency testing materials as required.
- Analyzes technical issues related to specimen collection, laboratory data, and instrumentation. Identifies causes and implements corrective actions per guidelines.
- Calibrates instruments, performs preventive and corrective maintenance, and documents activities. Recognizes repair needs and maintains appropriate records.
- Participates in continuing education (6-10 hours/year) through workshops, in-services, or meetings.
- Provides in-service presentations (1-2/year).
- Maintains a clean and organized work area, decontaminates surfaces and equipment according to protocol.
- Participates in training students and new employees, providing technical support as needed.
- Communicates pertinent information to the next shift to ensure efficient operation.
- Demonstrates troubleshooting skills, adheres to quality control and maintenance schedules.
- Submits 1-2 occurrence reports for process improvements and suggests processing enhancements.
- Maintains error rates within acceptable limits (no more than 1 major error, 10 minor errors).
- Follows standard work procedures, reports issues promptly, and suggests improvements during LEAN assessments.
- Ensures adequate reagents and supplies are available to prevent delays.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field required.
- Doctoral degree in Medicine required.
- Degree requirements waived for high school graduates with military training (50 weeks) as Medical Laboratory Specialist.
Experience
- 1-2 years of clinical laboratory training and/or experience required.
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP Medical Technologist certification required or
- AMT certification or equivalent required or
- ASCP specialist certification in the designated specialty required.
- Certification is waived for applicants with ≥5 years' experience in the specialty or an M.D., Master's, or PhD in the field.
This position has a hiring range of $34.98 - $62.52.
