Job Description

Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Microbiology – Grand Rapids, MI

Monday to Friday, 8:00 PM – 5:30 AM or 9:00 PM – 6:30 AM, with rotational weekends.

Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility in those specialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience.

Employee may be eligible to receive shift differential of 10% for some or all hours worked on second shift and 15% for some or all hours worked on third shift. Additional details on shift differential will be provided if an offer is extended.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot all applicable instruments/procedures in the department.
  • Provide support in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement and special projects as assigned.
  • Perform and report assigned analytical tests in accordance with SOPs ensuring quality control requirements are met.
  • Support laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting and record keeping of patient test results.
  • Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time of results including STATS or critical results to clients.
  • Monitor reagent/test kit dates and document QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function.
  • Inform supervisory personnel of all problems associated with test procedures.
  • Report deviations from standard or accepted testing procedures and cooperate with investigations.
  • Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized reporting to physicians.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
  • Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
  • Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls and/or work practice controls as directed.
  • Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel when applicable.
  • Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections when needed.
  • Assume lead responsibilities when a supervisor is absent, if qualified and delegated.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. This is not an exhaustive list but a general description of the work performed.
Qualifications

Required Work Experience: One year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity testing in a clinical laboratory setting.

Preferred Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with the most current year in the present department.

Physical And Mental Requirements
  • May require lifting and carrying objects from 1 to 10 pounds frequently; 11 to 25 pounds occasionally; 36 to 50 pounds seldom; over 50 pounds not without assistance.
  • Stand and work at the bench for long periods.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • Use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments demanding significant manual dexterity.
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge in the designated specialty.
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
  • Bachelor or Associate degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or Laboratory Science, or completion of ACS or equivalent training.
  • Foreign‑educated candidates report credentials; U.S. candidates provide original transcripts.
  • State‑specific requirements may apply; check with local HR or QA departments.
