Job Description

Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Reed City, MI. Monday to Friday, variable work schedule with rotational weekends. FLOAT role covering Reed City and Big Rapids, MI. Performs tests of moderate/high complexity requiring independent judgment and responsibility in qualified specialties. Eligible for shift differential: 10% on second shift, 15% on third shift.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot all applicable instruments/procedures.
• Provide support in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement and special projects.
• Perform and report assigned analytical tests per SOP, ensuring quality control requirements are met.
• Support and comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, processing, reporting and record keeping.
• Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time, including STAT or critical results.
• Ensure reagents/test kits have correct received, expiration, and open dates.
• Conduct QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function; make quality control decisions regarding assay disposition.
• Inform supervisory personnel of problems affecting test procedures.
• Report actual or potential deviations from standard or accepted testing procedures.
• Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized physician review.
• Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
• Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
• Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
• Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements.
• Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and/or work practice controls as directed.
• Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable.
• Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.
• Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor when qualified and delegated.
• Perform other duties as assigned – this is not an exhaustive list.

Qualifications

• Required work experience: One (1) year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity testing in a clinical laboratory setting.
• Preferred work experience: Minimum of 3 years clinical experience, most current year in present department.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Lifting/Carrying: 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 36–50 lbs seldom; over 50 lbs without assistance.
• Ability to stand and work at bench for long periods; frequent walking/standing.
• Requires manual dexterity for wide variety of pipettes and laboratory instruments.

Knowledge

• Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge in the designated specialty.
• Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
• BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology, or Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433.
• Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF; U.S.‑educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript.
• Other state‑specific requirements may apply; check with local HR or QA departments.
