Qualifications

  • Verifies routine results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Receives guidance from more experienced staff or leaders.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with computer systems for ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Maintains proper preparation and use of reagents and supplies.
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes.


Formally Dedicated In Memory As The Anthony F. Walsh Memorial Microbiology Laboratory, The Department Features Advanced Automation And Molecular Technologies. The Facility's Diagnostic Capabilities Include



  • Bacteriology & Culture Identification: Processing blood, tissue, and fluid cultures using automated incubators and highly advanced mass spectrometry for near-instant bacterial identification once growth is achieved.

  • Mycobacteriology (AFB): Highly specialized isolation and identification of acid-fast bacilli (such as tuberculosis).

  • Mycology & Parasitology: Identification of fungal elements and parasitic infections.

  • Molecular Diagnostics & Virology: Utilizing PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing for rapid nucleic acid amplification of viral and complex microbial pathogens


Schedule: Monday-Friday 2:30pm-11pm with weekend rotation every 3rd weekend of the month

Essential Functions

  • Regularly reports work activities and pending work to the oncoming technologist.

  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.



Other Related Functions


  • Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.

  • Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.

  • Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.

  • Responsible for an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.

  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.



Qualifications


Education/Training


  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree required.

  • Successful completion of clinical laboratory training internship.



Licensure/Certification


  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.

  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.
