Job summary

Trinity Health Livingston - Brighton in Brighton, NY is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist. The role is 24 hours per week with a 3-11:30pm shift, in the Lab department. Authorization to work in the U.S. is required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Education includes a Baccalaureate in Medical Technology or MLS, or a science degree with relevant lab experience. ASCP/NCLS certification preferred; experience in a clinical lab is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science; or science degree with relevant lab experience.
• Relevant work experience in a medical laboratory if MLS/MT degree is not obtained.
• MT/MLT/MLS ASCP or NCLS certification preferred.
• Authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; visa sponsorship not available.

Responsibilities

• Record and/or enter laboratory results and flag unusual or highly abnormal results for supervisor review.
• Report stat and highly abnormal results promptly per procedures.
• Compare results with prior patient data and alert supervisor or pathologist of unusual fluctuations.
• Perform quality control and maintenance; calibrate and operate laboratory equipment as assigned.
• Notify appropriate personnel of problems (specimens, equipment, QC issues).
• Prepare standards, reagents, and materials used in testing.
• Coordinate with nursing units or client offices for results and inquiries.

Required Qualifications:

Education

• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or university in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
  - May consider a bachelor’s degree in science with a combination of relevant work experience in a comparable laboratory setting. Proof of educational transcripts must be submitted at time of application.

Experience

• Relevant work experience in a medical laboratory is required if MLS/MT degree is not obtained.

Certification/Licensure

• Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – ASCP, or NCLS certification preferred.

What you will do:

• Records and/or enters laboratory computer results of tests performed and advises supervisor spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release of results for reporting.
• Reports results of tests ordered stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner and according to established policies and procedures.
• Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention of supervisor or pathologist to unusual fluctuations.
• Performs required quality control and equipment maintenance and calibrates and operates laboratory equipment used in performance of the tests pertinent to the section to which assigned.
• Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations, in accordance with department policy on procedure.
• Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing.
• Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel regarding results and for clarification of requests and other routine problems which may arise.
