Job summary

Venesco, LLC is recruiting Medical Laboratory Scientists for services at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma, with travel to surrounding locations for the Armed Services Blood Bank Center. The role involves performing a full range of lab procedures across chemistry, hematology, serology, and related disciplines, and ensuring quality control and instrument maintenance.

Candidates should have an NAACLS- or ABHES-accredited MLS program, BLS certification, and board certification/registration as MLS.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from NAACLS- or ABHES-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA or Red Cross.
  • Board certification/registration as MLS by ASCP or AMT or ASDHA-approved equivalent.
  • One year of clinical laboratory experience in hematology, chemistry, cytology, histology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, or blood bank.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a full range of automated and non-automated lab procedures in chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology according to established protocols.
  • Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis and prepare specimens for analysis.
  • Prepare reagents and reference materials; calibrate, standardize, and maintain instruments; verify proper operation and QC checks.
  • Identify causes of common issues; perform simple repairs and corrections as needed.
  • Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products and maintain proper records for QA reports.

New openings exist for Medical Laboratory Scientists to provide services at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma with travel to surrounding locations for the Armed Services Blood Bank Center.

Hours:

Normal hours will be established by the work center and will be a 40-hour week, with an 8-hour day scheduled between the hours of 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday, depending on the blood drive schedule, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. Some blood drives require longer workdays, up to 12-hour days; in these cases, the HCW will be scheduled to work during the peak work hours and be transported back to the donor center or lodging site as to not exceed the 40-hour work week.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform a full range of automated and non-automated laboratory procedures in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology according to established protocols.
  • Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis. Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained.
  • Prepare reagents and primary reference materials as necessary. Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Identify the cause of common problems and make simple repairs.
  • Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction. Locate and implement corrections. Obtain analytical data, convert to a prescribed unit of reporting, as necessary, and correlate data to verify results.
  • Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products and maintain proper records for quality control and quality assurance reports.
Requirements

1. Degree/Education: Graduate from a medical laboratory scientist training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

2. Certifications: Basic Life Support from a course approved by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

3. Board Certification: Certification/registration as Medical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (ASDHA).

4. Experience: One year of experience in a clinical laboratory in any one or a combination of the following sections: hematology, chemistry, cytology, histology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank.
