Job summary

Lake Health District in Lakeview, OR seeks a Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform routine and complex diagnostic tests, collect and test blood, and maintain blood bank records. The role requires state-of-the-art lab skills, equipment operation, and collaboration with physicians.

The candidate will perform immunological, serological, bacteriological testing, and venipunctures, while complying with safety and regulatory standards. On-call rotations and continuous learning are part of the job.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or closely related science.
  • Board Certification by ASCP or AMT.
  • Experience and other requirements may be gained concurrently.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and complex laboratory diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Collect, test, and store blood; maintain blood bank records and procedures.
  • Perform bacteriological, immunological, and serological tests on body fluids and specimens.
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures as required and document results.
  • Discuss results with physicians and participate in on-call rotations; ensure safety per OSHA.

Job description

Position: Medical Laboratory Scientist
Location: Lakeview, OR

Conduct routine and complex laboratory diagnostic tests and procedures. Collect, test, and store blood; maintain blood bank records; perform blood bank procedures. Perform and observe chemical tests on patient's specimens and record all results. Use and maintain all laboratory equipment. Receive blood specimens, perform blood tests and study morphology of blood components. Perform bacteriological tests on body fluids, exudates, skin scrapings and surgical specimens. Perform immunological and serological tests on body fluids and other specimens and document all test results. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures based on thorough knowledge of test requirements; assist in clinical laboratory sample reference preparation. Remain current on State and Federal regulations related to position and duties. Follow all protocols regarding safety precautions as defined by facility policy and OSHA regulations. Study blood samples for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types. Operate sophisticated laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and cell counters. Discuss results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with physicians. Participate in shared on-call rotation outside of normal staffing hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays. Exposure to infectious specimens/potential infections via patient contact during specimen collection.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a closely related science (foreign equivalent accepted), and

Requirements

Board Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT)
